TRAINING PROGRAMS AND SUIT ALL

Dedicated expert professionals will work with you to suit your needs. The schedule through the week from Monday to Saturday consists of two hour daily morning Muay Thai sessions from 9-11am,  After a sizeable mid-day period for recovery, recharging the batteries and if you’re smart, eating we have Mixed Martial Arts / BJJ session from 4-5:30pm, and then the afternoon Muay Thai session which lasts from 4-6pm. The sport is considered by many to be the most complete and effective stand-up striking martial art system in the world. Known and respected as “The Science of Eight Limbs”, Muay Thai boxers are taught to attack with fists, legs, knees and elbows, with a wide array of punching, kicking, kneeing and elbow offensive manoeuvres. Defensively, blocks with the shins and elbows led practitioners of other martial arts, after competing against Thai boxers, name them “Men of Stone”. There is also a real beauty and elegance to Muay Thai that many fail to appreciate until they come to Thailand. The art of eight limbs can be used to devastating effect, but performed properly by professionals and the speed and precision of the techniques is a sight to behold. Some of the higher scoring attacks such as sweeps and knees to the body can be set up by feints, the effortless flow of the combinations that skilled Thais put together is brilliant, and seeing top level Nak Muays (boxers) such as Saenchai and the like execute these moves in such exquisite fashion really shows what Muay Thai can be, and is, all about. Elite Nak Muays and the sport and art of Muay Thai executed with elegance and skill really puts the “art” in “martial art”.

Well-executed Muay Thai can be the most beautiful and fluid martial arts attack you could hope to see, and watching two skilled practitioners competing against each other is a great spectacle. And nowhere on earth is that spectacle superior to Thailand. Beyond the two national stadiums, you can watch free televised Muay Thai every Sunday on Channel 7; this can often be the high-watermark of the sport, as the Ch.7 combatants are generally rising youngsters who are hungry for glory and a shot in the Rajadamnern or Lumpinee Stadiums, and before a nationally televised audience put on great displays of heart and skill.

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS (MMA)

Such is the moniker given to MMA or Mixed Martial Arts, the most comprehensive form of professional and sanctioned fightsport existing in the world today. Known as “cagefighting” by many in the west (due to mainstream media coverage) and most associated with American organisation The Ultimate Fighting Championship – more commonly known as UFC – the sport has become a familiar spectacle and has grown rapidly in all corners of the globe. Thailand, the mecca of Muay Thai and home of stand-up fightsport, is no exception. With Bangkok’s DARE, Ko Samui’s Friday Night Fight Night (FNFN) and probably many more to come, Thailand saw promotions finally start to host MMA events on its soil in recent years. And in those years, the country saw a great deal more martial artists and aspiring fighters flock to its shores with the intention to become proficient in something other than Muay Thai. In present day Thailand, skilled Brazilian Jiu Jitsu players and high calibre wrestlers, pro-MMA fighters and submission grapplers coach thousands of young fighters looking to hone their skills in the grappling aspects of MMA whilst learning the best stand-up martial art in its cultural and spiritual home. As such, MMA in Thailand is booming, and just as thousands of people continue to flock here to learn the art of Muay Thai from its true masters, a small but growing percentage of them now come here to learn grappling and how to become a skilled and well-rounded Mixed Martial Artist too. Here at Maximum, we have a dedicated team of qualified Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors and players, grapplers and of course, experienced Muay Thai veterans coaching the stand-up aspects of MMA.

BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)

Thailand is known for being the mecca of Muay Thai and stand-up fighting, but its grappling scene has exploded in recent years. None other than world Muay Thai & BJJ champion, black belt and Asia-MMA star Adam Kayoom said that “Asia is now STACKED with top notch BJJ players and great grappling”, and from a man who calls Thailand home, those words carry some weight. With a slew of black and brown belts converging on Thailand in recent years, and the emergence of several prodigies and a whole host of new grappling tournaments in Bangkok and Thailand’s neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Hong Kong, Thailand’s BJJ scene has grown exponentially. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a submission grappling art which uses primarily ground-based techniques to secure chokes and joint-locks on your opponent or attacker. The style was popularised by the success of Royce Gracie in the early UFC events, and ever since 1993, Mixed Martial Artists have studied and trained in BJJ in order to maximise their ability to win. One oft-repeated mantra regarding BJJ is “the ground is the ocean, and the BJJ player is the shark”. The point is; fighters not versed in BJJ have very little chance against fighters that train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That was proven in comprehensive fashion over two decades ago. Simply put, if you do not train in BJJ, catch-wrestling or some form of submission grappling, you are not a true Mixed Martial Artist and you have a very limited chance of success at just about any level of MMA. Maximum Fitness & Combat Centre’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu head coach Mike Orlandini is a BJJ brown belt and black-belt level submission grappler with years upon years of experience touring the world, training and competing. He is a known and accomplished member of the jiu jitsu community, and experienced in coaching advanced and new students alike. If you are staying here long-term and/or are reasonably accomplished as a grappler, there are several BJJ and submission grappling tournaments in Asia in which members of most of the notable gyms roll against each other in IBJJF sanctioned bouts. Thailand’s most notable competition is the Bangkok Open. This takes place in the nation’s capital annually in late October. Many celebrated grapplers compete in the black, brown and purple belt divisions, many of whom are known in the Asia-MMA community, and there is generally white-belt divisions at various weights and in both gi (BJJ) and no-gi-submission grappling alike.
