Learn about the Chi Ishi - Karate Training Tool

This page provides details about the Chi Ishi. This traditional Japanese martial arts training tool is used by some Karate sub-styles in order to develop hand, wrist, arm and shoulder strength. The extension of the weight provides extra conditioning to hand and wrist strength. This equipment is used in Hojo Undo, traditional strength training used by some Karate styles.

A Chi Ishi consists of a wooden pole with a concrete weight at one end. Martial arts students must grip the wooden bar and swing the concrete weight around or hold the Chi Ishi stationary with the weight extended. Chi Ishi training is similar to modern kettlebell workouts.
