Tessen (War Fans) - Japanese Martial Arts Weapon

The Tessen is a metal fan that was used as a martial arts weapon in ancient Japan. It was used for strikes, joint locks and even as a shield. This weapon is used extensively in Tessenjutsu.

Remember in the old days, there was no air conditioning. Therefore, it was acceptable for samurai to carry fans. Moreover, a Tessen could be carried into areas where swords were not allowed.

For other traditional martial arts weapons, please visit the main Martial Arts Weapons section.
