Sternoclavicular Articulation (Collar)

Bones: Clavicle and sternum.

Cartilage: A double hinged articular disc between the clavicle and the clavicular notch of the manubrium (top portion of the sternum).

Muscles: There is no muscle that directly influences this joint.

Ligaments: Sternoclavicular ligament that goes over the articular disc. Costoclavicular ligament connecting the end of the clavicle to the cartilage between the first rib and the sternum.

Joint type: Saddle, doesn't allow for axial rotation.

Mechanics: The clavicle helps stabilize the shoulder joint and absorb shock, therefore has a limited movement. It is not directly moved by any muscular attachments. This mechanism is what allows you to slouch your shoulders forward or arch them back stretching your chest.

Injury: The above mechanics should better illustrate the severity of breaking the clavicle mentioned on the Bones page.

For information on additional joints please refer back to the Joints page.
