Instructions for the Sprawl - Grappling Takedown Defense

The sprawl is one of the most fundamental moves in almost every form of grappling that involves neutral (both grapplers standing) positions. Even though the sprawl is a very basic leg defense, it is an absolutely necessary technique in both Folkstyle and Freestyle Wrestling, Mixed Martial Arts and several other styles.

Instructions for the Sprawl

  • Since the sprawl is a defensive move, your opponent must first "shoot" at your legs.
  • Once your opponent attempts a shot, you must first kick your legs back (how far depends on the style) and thrust your hips on his/her shoulders.
  • Your chest should remain as upright as possible to keep as much weight on your opponent as you can.
  • From here there are many techniques to either return to neutral position or gain dominant position, the most simple one is to keep sprawling until you can push your opponent off and stand up.
