Side Roll - Martial Arts Falling Technique

This page provides details on the side roll. This martial arts falling technique is used when a martial artist has been knocked or thrown laterally (sideways) versus forward or back. A related falling technique is the side breakfall.

The side roll reduces the chance of injury when a martial artist has been knocked to the ground or has been thrown to the ground. This technique also allows the martial artist to quickly get back on their feet and deal with their attacker. Falling techniques are used by a wide range of martial arts such as Judo, Aikido and Krav Maga.

Falling techniques should be practiced on your knees and/or from a crouching position before attempting a standing fall. All exercises should be supervised by a trained instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. For more breakfalls and rolls, please visit the main Martial Arts Falling Techniques section.
