Sai - Offensive Blocks

These are offensive blocks because they are executed from the offensive secondary grip.

Instructions for Technique

  • High Block - this is done over the head with the monouchi replacing the function of the forearm in a typical high block, with the tip pointed up at an angle which also enables hooking the weapon.
  • Middle Block - this is done at the chudan section from the outside or inside of the body with the monouchi blade of the sai pointed up and our to the blocking side to better ensure hooking the weapon.
  • Low Block - this id done pointing the blade of the sai downwards to block a strike to the leg.
  • X-Block - mostly done over the head but can be done at the chudan and gedan levels. Here the blades of two sais are crossed like and "X" similar to an empty hand karate "X" block. Only the two monouchi can be crossed or they can be crossed interlocking with the yoku for a stronger block and better hooking ability.

The second half of this video shows most of these blocks.
