Mawashi Empi Uchi - Roundhouse Elbow Strike

Mawashi Empi Uchi is a close range elbow strike used in Karate. This strike is thrown on the horizontal plane utilizing the full torque of the hips similar to a roundhouse kick.

Instructions for Technique

  • The arm is held up so that the forearm is on a horizontal plane
  • The elbow of the arm is full bent with the thumb side of the hand facing the shoulder
  • The hips torque powerfully in the direction of the strike
    • The tip of the elbow should cover a minimum circumference of 90 degrees of the starting position for adequate power
  • For additional power to the strike use one or a combination of the following
    • A grab or pull
    • A lunge
    • A strong follow through
    • More than 90 degree twist
