Written Instructions for Tang Soo Do Form 5 (Pyung Ahn Ee Dan Hyung)

  • Ready Stance.
  • Look left. Cross both hands in front of your chest with the right arm on the outside. This will block an attack from over head while grabbing an opponent at the left. Move right arm above head in high defense. Move left arm out to the left in a Side Block with fisted fingers facing outward. Fighting Stance. There is a tendency to face sideways. This is incorrect. You should end in a true fighting stance facing 90 degrees left of Chun Be. The right arm should be blocking an attacker from striking your forehead.
  • Bring the right arm directly down rotating the wrist 180 degrees until the right little finger touches the bottom of the right rib cage. Pull the left arm in as if grabbing an opponent’s shirt and pulling them towards you. Stop when the left hand touches the right shoulder. Right hand moves in an upper cut punch direction passing out side of the inward moving left arm. Fighting Stance.
  • Straighten out the right arm rotating the wrist downward 180 degrees until the fisted palm is facing downward and the right arm is parallel with the floor. Pull the left arm down in preparation for a Middle Punch. The left little finger should touch the back of the left rib cage. Lift the left leg until the thigh is parallel to the floor. Middle Side Punch with the left hand while placing the left foot down in a Horse-riding stance. Pull the right hand back as if preparing for another Middle Punch. Horse-riding stance.
  • Look right. Bring both hands down to the left hip. Raise left arm above head in high defense. This will block an attack from over head while grabbing an opponent at the right. Move right arm out to the right in a Side Block with fisted fingers facing outward. Fighting Stance.
  • Bring left arm directly down rotating the wrist 180 degrees until the left little finger touches the bottom of the left rib cage. Pull the right arm in as if grabbing an opponent’s shirt and pulling them towards you. Stop when the right hand touches the left shoulder. Left hand moves in an upper cut punch direction passing out side of the inward moving right arm. Fighting Stance.
  • Straighten out the left arm rotating the wrist downward 180 degrees until the fisted palm is facing downward and the left arm is parallel with the ground. Pull the right arm down in preparation for a Middle Punch. The right little finger should touch the back of the right rib cage. Lift the right leg until the thigh is parallel to the floor. Middle Side Punch with the right hand while placing the right foot down in a Horse-riding stance. Pull the left hand back as if preparing for another Middle Punch. Horse-riding stance.
  • Move the left foot forward 12 inches and to the right half way between where it was and the right foot. Look ‘backward’ to the right 90 degrees. Rotate the body 90 degrees to the right until the extended right arm is pointing behind you. At this time the body should be facing 90 degrees right of where it was at the end of the Middle Side Punch. Bend the right arm leftward until the right forearm is parallel with the chest. The right upper arm should be perpendicular to the chest. During this time the right arm should remain at the same height it was at the end of the Middle Side Punch. The left hand should still be poised at the left side as if to begin a Middle Punch. Raise the right leg in preparation for a Side Kick. The right thigh should be parallel to the floor and the perpendicular to the chest. The toes of the right foot should be curled upward.
  • Punch with the right hand backward. At the finish the thumb-end of the fist should be pointing downward. Do not actually point downward with the thumb, just have the thumb end of the fist towards the floor and the pinky end of the fist toward the ceiling. Side Kick as high as possible. Ki-yup. Pull the right leg back in, but leave the right hand extended.
  • Rotate the head to the left 180 degrees (‘forward’). Bring both hands, open palmed, down to the right hip. Move both hands up to a Middle Knife Hand Block with the left hand leading. Lower the right leg behind you and end in a Fighting Stance. Fighting Stance.
  • Step forward in a right hand leading Middle Knife Hand Block. Fighting Stance.
  • Step forward in a left hand leading Middle Knife Hand Block. Fighting Stance.
  • Rotate the left hand downward as if to block an opponent’s punch. Step forward into a very low Kwan Soo. Very low Front Stance. Ki-yup.
  • Bring both hands, open palmed, down to the right hip. Look left behind you. Turn left 270 degrees and Middle Knife Hand Block leading with the left hand and foot. Fighting Stance.
  • Turn right 45 degrees stepping into a Middle Knife Hand Block with the right hand and foot leading. Fighting Stance.
  • Turn right 135 degrees stepping into a Middle Knife Hand Block with the right hand and foot leading. Fighting Stance.
  • Turn left 45 degrees stepping into a Middle Knife Hand Block with the left hand and foot leading. Fighting Stance.
  • Make fists of both hands. Lower right hand and pull the left hand toward the right shoulder until the elbows of both hands almost touch. Raise the left knee until the thigh is parallel with the floor. Rotate 45 degrees to the left and step into a Front Stance. Front Stance, but the body is turned heavily towards the left to minimize the width. Rotate the right arm upward and pull the left arm backward so that they end up as a right arm Side Block. (Yes the left foot is forward, the right hand is forward, and the body is turned left. This hurts).
  • High Front Snap Kick with the right leg, step forward. Front Stance.
  • Middle Punch with the left hand. Front Stance.
  • Inside/Outside Block with the left arm. Front Stance.
  • High Front Snap Kick with the left leg and step forward. Front Stance.
  • Middle Punch with right arm. Front Stance.
  • Step forward and Two Hand Block to the right. Front Stance.
  • Turn 270 degrees to the left and Low Block with the left arm. Front Stance.
  • Middle Knife Hand Block with left hand. Front Stance.
  • Step 45 degrees to the right and High Defense with the right arm. Fighting Stance.
  • Turn 135 degrees to the right and Low Block with the right arm. Front Stance.
  • Middle Knife Hand Block with the right hand. Front Stance.
  • Step 45 degrees to the left and High Defense with the left arm. Fighting Stance. Ki-yup.
  • Return to Ready Stance.
