Medicine Ball Planks - Martial Arts Core Exercise

This page provides details about Medicine Ball Planks. This core exercise is an enhanced version of the traditional plank exercise. Medicine ball planks are used in order to strengthen a martial artist's core muscles. A stronger core allows martial artists to better withstand hits (i.e. a punch to the stomach). Moreover, a stronger core helps to improve a martial artist's "rotational" or twisting power and this contributes to stronger kicks, punches and grappling techniques.

In this exercise, you will get into a plank position. However, your hands will be resting on a medicine ball. The instability of the medicine ball enhances the overall core workout provided by the plank position.

All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. For other exercises, please visit the Core Exercises or Medicine Ball Workouts sections.
