Kongoken - Karate Training Tool

This page provides details about the Kongoken. This traditional Japanese martial arts training tool is used by some Karate sub-styles in order to develop upper body, lower body and core strength. The Kongoken also provides balance training. This equipment is used in Hojo Undo, traditional strength training used by some Karate styles.

The Kongoken is a large heavy iron or steel ring used for full body strength training and conditioning. It can weigh up to 100 pounds. The theory behind this training tool is that its awkward shape focuses a student to use many different muscles when moving this unwieldy and heavy object. Moreover, this awkward shape impacts a student's balance and thus forcing students to work on stable stances and their positioning.
