Karate's Teisho-Uke or Palm Heel Block

This page provides details about the Karate technique known as Teisho-Uke or Palm Heel Block. This blocking technique uses an open palm to deflect or block an incoming strike by an opponent. Karate students learn this block for kata, self-defense, etc. This technique is used by many Karate styles such as Shotokan and Goju-Ryu.

Open hand blocks can be turned into grabs in order to attempt grappling techniques or joint locks. However, an open hand block is also more susceptible to finger damage versus a closed fist block.
