Instructions for the ITF Taekwondo Sitting Stance or Annun Sogi

This page provides details for the ITF Taekwondo Sitting Stance (or Horse Riding Stance). In Korean, this Taekwondo stance is known as Annun Sogi. Stances are be used in ITF Taekwondo patterns, training exercises, sparring, etc.

Written Instructions for the ITF Taekwondo Sitting Stance

  • This stance is also known as the Horse Stance, Horse Riding Stance, Riding Stance, etc.
  • Feet face directly forward.
  • Feet are one and a half shoulder widths apart.
  • Feet are parallel to one another. One is not in front of the other.
  • Body weight is split evenly between both legs.
  • Bend moderately at the knees. According to ITF Switzerland Taekwon-Do Federation, a student's knees should be bent "until the knee caps come over the ball of the foot".
  • This stance is often used for punching exercises and to build leg strength.
