Instructions for a Hip Throw - Grappling Technique

A hip throw is one of the most straightforward and powerful ways to take your opponent down in a martial arts competition. Despite the counters and the time needed to perform the throw (which can be an advantage to your opponent), this move is an essential if you want to progress to the higher levels in Mixed Martial Arts.

This type of throw is an essential technique used by many martial arts. Examples include Aikido's Koshi Nage and Judo's Harai Goshi.

Written Instructions

1. To perform a hip throw, you must be side on with your opponent, your opponent being the larger line or the bottom of the "T" shape in this position, and you being the top of the "T" shape in this position (a little like the slightly weakened position your opponent is in now compared to yourself).
2. Next, you must step the leg that is behind your opponent in front of your opponent and turn away from your opponent (as if they were taking your back). However, if you are quick at this maneuver, this will not happen. Now, grab your opponent's left arm if your right leg was behind them, and vice versa.
3. Finally, make sure that your hips are inside your opponent and weaken your opponent and lift them up. Quickly, tilt your head to the right if you are grabbing their left arm and vice versa, whilst pulling the arm that you are grabbing towards the direction of their arm.
