Instructions for the Front Elbow Thrust

This page provides instructions for the Front Elbow Thrust (or Thrusting Elbow Strike). This elbow strike is often used in self-defense situations when you are very close to an attacker. It can be used against an attacker's head, etc. This technique differs from the traditional Front Elbow Strike because you are not rotating your body and elbow in this technique.

For other elbow strikes (i.e. spinning elbow strike), please visit the main Elbow Strikes section.

Written Instructions for Technique

  • In this technique, you will raise your elbow until it is level with your head or upper body.
  • You will step forward and thrust or stab forward with your elbow tip.
  • This strike is usually used as a follow-on technique when your hands have been raised in order to guard your head (as your elbow is already in position).
  • This technique is often used in a clinch given the limited range of an elbow thrust.
