Mae Empi Uchi - Forward Elbow Strike

This is an elbow strike that moves forward into the opponent. Elbow strikes are great for close quarter defense where it can be difficult to throw larger attacks such as a punch.

Instructions for Technique:

  • This elbow strike can be done with the arm in a vertical or horizontal orientation
  • There is not as much torque or twist in this elbow strike as with others
    • But there is is a slight thrust with the shoulder
  • Though there is less twist in this elbow whole body momentum can be used
    • Lunging forward for example with the strike will put the entire body weight into the tip of elbow to strike its target such as the solar plexus
  • This strike is usually placed right at the solar plexus
    • Remember this strike goes forward into the opponent

An beautiful example of this elbow strike can be seen in the kata Shisochin at 1:23
