Foam Roller Exercises Foam roller exercises are used by some martial artists to reduce muscle tension, loosen muscle "knots" and help range of motion. Foam roller exercises are often used during the warm-up and/or cool-down phases of a workout. Foam roller exercises are usually performed before stretching. This type of exercise is also known as self myofascial release exercises. A foam roller exercise generally involves placing a body part (i.e. quadricep muscle) on the foam roller and slowing rolling the body part across the foam roller. Foam roller exercises are often used as a self-administered muscle "massage". All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. If you have had an injury or are in pain, please see a doctor before starting any stretching or exercise program. For other exercises, please visit the main Martial Arts Physical Fitness section.
