Instructions for the Flat Stance (Pu Bu) - Kung Fu & Wushu Stance

The Gong Bu stance can be translated as the "flat stance". The chinese name is 仆步 and the pinyin is pū bù.

This is one of the five main stances (or steps) found in most of the Chinese Kung Fu styles. There are some variations regarding the position of the feet or how deep the stance should be to be considered correct, but the principles are still the same.

In this picture, the flat stance is being practiced on a piece of Kung Fu training equipment known as a Mei Hua Zhuang (or Plum Blossom Poles).

The main aspects for a properly performed Pu Bu are:

  1. The back leg should be bended with the thigh horizontal or even lower
  2. The front leg must be perfectly straight
  3. Both feet must be flat on the ground and the front foot must turn inside, perpendicular to the front leg
