Flag Sparring - Martial Arts Technique for Young Kids Flag sparring is used by martial arts schools as a fun way to teach blocking, body movement, footwork, etc. It is often used by instructors to teach some basic sparring techniques to young kids. However, it is also a fun "training tool" for adults. This sparring technique is somewhat similar to the sport known as flag football. Flag sparring is also known as martial arts tail grabs, belt grabs, etc. The goal of the flag sparring match is to capture a belt tucked behind the back of the opponent. Instructors will hang a spare belt from the belt on each kid's back. They will then let two kids face off. The first person to pull out the "tail" (rear belt) of his/her opponent wins. An alternative method is to use two belts by placing a belt on either side of the child. For other kid-friendly "games", please visit the section on popular martial arts games for children.
