Close Grip Barbell Curls - Martial Arts Strength Training Exercise

This page provides details on "Close Grip Barbell Curls". This strength exercise is focused on the biceps muscle. This is the muscle that runs down the front of the arm from the shoulder to the elbow. A close grip barbell curl works on the outside of the biceps muscle. In contrast, a wide grip barbell curl works on the inside of the bicep.

Martial artists work on their biceps strength in order to generate stronger punches (esp. biceps "influenced" punches like the hook punch and uppercut punch). The biceps are also used extensively in grappling techniques because they help to pull an opponent in (versus the triceps which helps to push an opponent away). Other biceps exercises include concentration curls, reverse curls, hammer curls, etc.

All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. If you have had an injury or are in pain, please see a doctor before starting any stretching or exercise program.
