Instructions for the Chair Pose - Yoga for Martial Arts Strength & Flexibility

This page provides details for the Chair Pose. This Yoga pose is used by martial arts students in order to strengthen their quads, glutes, hip flexors, etc. It also helps to stretch a student's calves and Achiilles tendon. Some students think this exercise is the Yoga version of the martial arts horse riding stance or Kiba Dachi exercise (where Karate and Taekwondo instructors make students hold a horse riding stance for an extended period in order to build up their leg muscles).

All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized.

For additional martial arts stretches targeting other areas of the body, please visit the main Martial Arts Stretches or Yoga for Martial Arts sections.
