Instructions for Aikido's Jo Dori - Defenses Against Jo Attacks (Short Staff Attacks)

This page provides students with instructions for Aikido Jo Dori (or Tori) techniques. These are Aikido defenses against Jo attacks (or short staff attacks). These techniques can also be applied against opponents with clubs, sticks, etc.

However, be aware that unarmed combat against guns or knives is very dangerous and should only be used as a last resort. Consider other options first (i.e. run away from danger).

The information on this page is meant to reinforce and supplement the instruction given at your Aikido classes. To properly understand these techniques, you need to learn them from an Aikido instructor who can provide you with an in-depth explanation of the technique, help correct your mistakes, answer your questions and detail how the technique should be utilized.

For other techniques (i.e. wrist, elbow, counters or dislocations), visit the main Aikido Techniques section.
