Agility Hurdle Drills

This page provides details on agility hurdle drills. Agility hurdle drills help with agility, foot speed, balance, coordination, etc. In contrast to agility ladders which are flat to the ground, most agility hurdles are 6" or 12* above the ground. This forces athletes to raise their feet and concentrate more on their footwork. In addition, higher hurdles help with the initial quick motion needed for fast martial arts kicks.

Agility training helps martial arts students to quickly maneuver and change positions/stances. This allows martial artists to evade an attack or launch a strike at undefended area (i.e. moving laterally in order to avoid an opponent's blow and thus being able to quickly launch an effective counter attack against an off-balance opponent). This is an essential element in a self-defense scenario or sparring match.

All stretches and exercises should be supervised by a trained martial arts instructor in order to prevent injuries and to ensure the proper technique is utilized. For additional agility drills (i.e. agility ladder drills), please visit the main Martial Arts Agility section.
