The Sit Thaharnaek gym is run by Thaharnaek Chumpaetour (Chumpaetour being his former camp in Khon Kaen). Thaharnaek was at one point ranked #2 at Rajadamnern stadium. It’s a relatively new gym, and it’s currently in the space that Burklerk was using before he moved his gym to his home in Lampang.

Location

The Sit Thaharnaek gym is located in the night Bazare area, just outside the moat towards the Meridian hotel. It’s an indoor gym and you’ll find it on the second level of a building nearby the Kalare boxing venue.

Here are the contact details:

You can click here to access a map and the address to the gym..

Accommodation

The gym doesn’t offer on-site accommodation, but with its central location, it’s easy to find a room nearby and commute to training.

Hongthong Gym http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/hongthong-muay-thai-gym/ Thu, 11 Jul 2013 18:38:23 +0000 http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/?p=1053
The “Hongthong” Muay Thai gym is owned and operated by twin brothers (Joe and Gen). At the time of this writing, Gen is still actively fighting at the highest level at the major stadiums in Bangkok. He is a former holder of the Thailand national title.

Joe has put his fight career on hiatus and currently focuses on being a trainer. Between the two of them, they have approximately 700 fights to their credit.

They have worked at various gyms in the past (working towards their dream of one day owning their own gym) and as you can tell by their Facebook fan page, they have quite a large following of friends and past students.

Location

The gym is located a few minutes away (driving) from the Chiang Mai airport. The gym is built on the land of the house where the brothers live and it’s located on a main road so it shouldn’t be too hard to find. Click here to access the exact address as well as a map to the gym.

Accommodation

The don’t have any on-site accommodation at the gym yet (as far as I know), but there are several hotels and apartments within walking distance from the gym and they offer daily, weekly or monthly rates.

If you’d like to pre-book your accommodation, just contact Joe or Gen via their Facebook page or website (both linked above) and they’ll give you the exact details.

Training Info and Photos

Like most gyms, they train 2x per day (6x per week) at Hongthong. The morning session runs from 7-9am and the afternoon session runs from 4-6pm. Here’s an outline of the training structure..

  • Warm-up and running
  • Skipping
  • Shadow boxing and technique
  • Bag work (3-5 rounds)
  • Pad work (3 rounds)
  • Sparring (optional) – technical or intense (50-70% of power)
  • Body-weight exercises
  • Stretching and cool-down

Charn Chai Muay Thai http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/charn-chai-muay-thai/ Sun, 13 Jan 2013 15:20:35 +0000 http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/?p=738
The Charn Chai Muay Thai gym is owned and operated by a fighter named Monkoldej Sitthepitak, who is better known by his nickname of “Bee”. Bee was a top ranked fighter at both Lumpinee and Rajadamnern during his fight career. Despite being ranked in the #1 position at both stadiums when he was 21 years old, he was never given a title fight.

Bee has racked up over 300 fights during his fight days and his career outside the ring, working as a trainer, is quite impressive as well. He’s worked at Bulldog gym in Sydney, Australia and at Mikes Gym where he helped train fighters such as Melvin Manhoef, Artur Kyshenko and Badr Hari.

Location

The gym is located in Pai, which is approximately 100km from Chiang Mai. Keep in mind though that there are a lot of windy roads on the way to Pai from Chiang Mai so it may take a bit longer to get there than expected. Here is a write up on Pai from the Charn Chai website.

Accommodation

The cost of living is very low in Pai and there are various accommodation options near the camp. Here is a list of the available rooms along with the prices.

Training Info & Photos

The morning session at Charn Chai runs from 8am-10am and the afternoon session runs from 3pm-5pm. A typical training session consists of jogging, skipping, bag work, pad work with the trainers, clinching, sparring (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and some conditioning exercises. The cost per session is 300 baht or it’s 500 baht for 2 sessions in 1 day. You can pay 2000 baht for a week, 8000 baht for a month and if you’re staying long term, they have discounts available.

Chay Yai Gym http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/chay-yai-gym/ Thu, 10 Jan 2013 07:08:44 +0000 http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/?p=666
Chay Yai Gym was first established over 30 years ago and was formerly known as Soonkila Watket Camp. The name of the gym was changed in the mid 90’s to honor the club’s most successful fighter, Chay Yai Sittehpitak. Chay Yai Sittehpitak was a top fighter in the 90’s and obtained 2 championship titles from Lumpinee stadium.

According to the website, two other Lumpinee champions were also produced here; Artthachai Por Samranchai (featherweight) and Karuehas Sor Supawan (junior featherweight & flyweight).

Location

Chay Yai gym is located in Nonh Hoi area of Chiang Mai; which is approximately 10 minutes from the city center. Here is a page that contains the address, a map and the contact details for the gym.

Accommodation

There’s all sorts of apartments and guesthouses to stay throughout Chiang Mai. Your best bet is to just head the area around the gym and check out some apartments for yourself. You can find rooms from as low as 2500 baht per month (of course this is with a contract and without air conditioning).

Training Info & Photos

Chay Yai is a traditional Muay Thai gym and they follow a the typical training structure you’d expect from a Thai gym. They train 6 times per week and twice per day. The morning session runs from 8am-10am and the afternoon session runs from 3pm-5:30pm.

The training sessions consist of jogging, skipping, stretching, shadow boxing, bag work, pad work, clinching and sometimes sparring. Mind you, the training structure is loose and a lot of the activities are optional so a bit of self motivation is necessary if you want to get the best results from the training.

Lanna Muay Thai, which is also known as “Kiat Busaba”, has been operating in Chiang Mai for over 20 years now. The gym is owned and run by a Canadian named Andy Thompson. Andy used to work in the oil industry and decided to follow his passion and open up his own gym.

Despite being run by a foreigner, the gym has earned a lot of respect over the years and most Thai’s in the Muay Thai scene will be familiar with the name. In this national geographic documentary, Andy explains how the camp came to fruition and the video also mentions that over 10 of Andy’s boxers have worked their way up the ranks to fight at the major Bangkok stadiums.

Location

The gym is located in Chiang Mai near Huay Kaew Road. The gym isn’t far from Kad Suan Khao shopping mall and Nimmanhemin road (trendy nightlife district). Here is a map to the gym.

Accommodation

They have a few rooms available for rent right at the gym (2 person per room) for 3000 baht per month and there is all sorts of apartments you can rent nearby the gym. Just head to the area and look around a bit for a room (or a house even) that fits your needs and budget. Plenty of options.

Santai Muay Thai http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/santai-muay-thai/ Mon, 31 Dec 2012 06:48:20 +0000 http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/?p=524
Santai, which was formerly known “Siam Number 1” before the new management took over, has seen a lot of growth in a short period of time. Such development indicates that they’re doing something right and keeping their customers happy. Most of the trainers here are from the famed Pinsinchai camp in Bangkok so they offer very authentic Muay Thai training.

Location

The Santai Muay Thai gym is located in San Kamphaeng, which is a district in the province of Chiang Mai. I’d say the gym is about 25 minutes or so from the city center. The gym offers a pick up service from the airport for 250 baht, which is very reasonable. Here’s a map to the gym.

Accommodation

Santai offers on-site accommodation at rates perhaps cheaper than any of the other gyms in Thailand. They recently built a 9 room apartment complex where you can rent a room (with a washroom) for 3500-5000 baht per month (depending on whether or not you want air conditioning). These prices are nearly what locals would expect to pay. There is also plenty of nearby apartment options within walking distance to the gym at very affordable rates.

Training Info & Photos

Like most gyms, there are 2 training sessions per day at Santai. The morning session goes from 6am-8am and is mostly geared around conditioning. There’s a long run followed by skipping, stretching, shadow boxing, bag work, and some strength and conditioning work to finish things off.

The afternoon session goes from 4pm-7:30pm and includes a shorter run, followed by stretching, skipping, shadow boxing, bag work, pad work (5 rounds), clinching, technical sparring (3x per week) and some endurance work to finish things off.

Burklerk Gym http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/burklerk-gym/ Thu, 27 Dec 2012 17:08:12 +0000 http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/?p=495
Burklerk Pinsinchai is an extremely accomplished Muay Thai fighter. He’s a 2x lumpinee champion, 2x Thailand champion and he won the “fighter of the year” award. Most importantly though, he’s a very technical trainer who likes to show a lot of unique techniques. Thepsutin Phumpangmuang can also be found training here at times and he’s a Thailand & Channel 7 stadium champion.

Location

The Burklerk gym used to be located right in the Chiang Mai night market near Kalare stadium. There has been some changes lately though.

Burklerk has sold the business in Chiang Mai is now training students out of his gym in Lampang province. Lampang is also in the Northern region of Thailand and is approximately an hour and a half from Chiang Mai.

Here is some detailed information on getting to Lampang from Bangkok, Chiang Mai etc.

Accommodation

The gym is located right in the center of the city. No need for on-site accommodation. You can just tour around and find a room to stay on your own. Plenty of hotels within walking distance for short stays and if you plan on staying long term or looking to save some money, you wouldn’t have any trouble finding an apartment/guesthouse nearby.

Training Info & Photos

Burklerk Pinsinchai is known to be a very technical trainer. He seems to show a lot of the little tricks and subtleties that other trainers don’t.

KC Muay Thai http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/kc-muay-thai-gym/ Sun, 16 Dec 2012 16:46:17 +0000 http://muaythaicampsthailand.com/?p=243
KC Muay Thai is owned by and Englishman named Kevin and a Thai fighter named Chun (hence the “KC” name). It’s a serious gym that puts effort into producing quality Thai fighters, but its also very welcoming to beginners.

Chun oversees the training sessions and does a great job at making sure everyone is working. He also speaks near perfect English as he’s spent quite a bit of time in Canada. His uncle is Ajarn Suchart (trainer to Simon Marcus & Matt Embree) at the Siam number 1 gym in Toronto.

Location

KC Muay Thai is located in Chiang Mai. The gym is approximately 15 minutes from the airport and to get there, just follow Hang Dong road (heading towards Hang Dong). Go past the Tesco Lotus (left side), then past the Shell gas station (also on the left). You will approach a Taekwondo school (RDC) on the left and once you past that, slow down and turn left where you see the “KC Muay Thai” sign.

Go straight for about 800 meters (until the end of the road) and then turn right. You will see the KC Muay Thai gym on the right hand side about 500 meters down.

Accommodation

There is an apartment complex located directly across the street from the gym that offers nice rooms at very inexpensive local rates. This video shows a tour of these rooms and provides some insight as to what it’s like living in Chiang Mai and training at KC Muay Thai.

Training Info and Photos

The training at KC is very structured and Chun, the co-owner/head trainer at the camp, keeps things organized and makes sure everyone is working hard. There are 2 sessions per day (Sundays excluded) which run from 7am-9am and again from 4pm-6pm.

The session starts off with a 4-8km run, which is followed by 15 minutes of skipping, 3 rounds of shadowboxing, 3-5 rounds of sparring, 3-5 rounds of pad work, 3-5 rounds of bag work and then some clinching and stretching to finish off with.
